In the Curriculum

The value of English in the curriculum? What can I say? Without English, nothing. And without good English, nothing very well.

Anne Fine, Author

In studying English pupils develop skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Effective communication, both written and spoken, is at the heart of what we do. Pupils learn to express themselves creatively and imaginatively. They learn to become enthusiastic and critical readers of stories, poems and plays as well as non-fiction and media texts.

Pupils are assessed in Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening throughout the year and at each Key Stage.

At Key Stage 3

Literature is at the heart of our curriculum. Pupils study a variety of whole texts including novels, drama and poetry in each year group. The chosen texts vary from twenty first century stories to more classical literature, including the study of a Shakespeare play in Year 8.

All Year 7 pupils work towards the bronze, silver and gold Bookworm certificates and badges during their Library lessons.

At Key Stage 4

Pupils are entered for (Edexcel) GCSE English Language and English Literature. Pupils focus on writing non-fiction as well as imaginative pieces. A variety of texts are studied including a British drama text, a pre 19th century novel, a Shakespeare play and an anthology of poems.

At Key Stage 5

English Literature (Edexcel) is offered at both AS and A2 level and students are able to study, in detail, a variety of texts including a contemporary poetry anthology and works by Dickens, McEwan, Shakespeare and Chaucer.
