Sheku's Chart Success
Congratulations to ex-Trinity pupil Sheku Kanneh-Mason whose debut album Inspiration has charted in the UK Top 20.
Sheku's album made it to number 18 after the first week on sale and it has already broken several records: he is the first BBC Young Musician to make the Top 20 in the album charts, has the highest entry for a 2018 debut artist and is the youngest cellist to make the Top 20.
We are hugely proud of Sheku's achievements and have no doubt that this is only a flavour of what is to come.
Sheku launched his album on January 26th and performed at a number of events in Nottingham.
#ShekuDay, as it was known, started with an assembly at Trinity to Year 7 and our Sixth Form where lots of media and press came to cover the event. That was followed by a trip to town in the NCT Sheku bus named in his honour after winning the BBC Young Musician competition in 2016. Sheku then visited the Royal Concert Hall to perform and sign albums for hundreds of queueing fans.
Sheku couldn't resist popping in to HMV to buy his own album - who can blame him?
After a number of interviews for radio and TV, he performed at Loxley House for the Mayor and various councillors and city council staff. He finished the day at Paul Smith for an intimate performance, with several young, budding cellists in the audience finding their own inspiration from Sheku's magnificent playing.
A Lovely Message
Jacqueline Du Pré was an early inspiration for Sheku; sadly she passed away at a young age. Sheku's album was released on what would have been her birthday and relatives Piers and Hilary du Pré sent Sheku a lovely message:
“Jackie would often say, ‘So many cellists can play technically well, but can they make music?’ Sheku makes music. He’s the first cellist since Jackie who has that natural and vibrant abandonment when playing. A sheer delight. Jackie would have loved to meet him.”
We are very grateful to Sheku for visiting and performing to us on what was an incredible day. Same time next year for the next album?
Thanks also go to Decca, Sheku's record label, for organising such a great, Nottingham-based launch day.
