Religious Education - Subject Guide


The RE Department supports the aims of this Catholic school in the diocese of Nottingham under the auspices of the Bishop of Nottingham. It offers Key Stage 3, GCSE, and A-Level courses and also contributes significantly to the delivery of general RE in the Sixth Form and the school’s pastoral programme.


  • To recognise a commitment to the academic demands of studying religion and its potential for spiritual and professional vocation.
  • To foster, through the Religious Education curriculum, the awareness that we live in a multi-faith society and that, as Catholics and Christians, we are called to work for harmony within this diversity.
  • To stimulate student curiosity, interest and enjoyment in exploring ultimate questions about the meaning of life.
  • To enable students to be familiar with a body of religious knowledge, principles, skills and vocabulary to articulate their own beliefs.
  • To develop an awareness in students of the implications of religion (past and present) for the individual, the community and the environment.
  • To allow students to develop informed opinions and to be able to support them by reasonable arguments that recognise the possible limitations of the ideas and concepts used.

Key Stage 3

At Key Stage 3 we follow a programme of study which has been constructed around the Curriculum Directory for Schools and meets the requirements to teach on the four main areas which are: Revelation, Church, Celebration and Life in Christ. This programme of study has been validated by the Nottingham Diocesan Education Service and provides a diverse mix of topics including religion and science, the sacraments, beliefs about the nature of God, challenges to belief, and aspects of Hinduism, Islam and Judaism.

Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4 we study the Eduqas Religious Studies Route B course which has three elements:

  • Foundational Catholic Theology
  • Applied Catholic Theology
  • Judaism

Pupils extend their knowledge of beliefs and practices. They develop their ability to discuss and critically evaluate a diverse range of opinions regarding matters of faith.

All students follow this course and it is externally examined in three separate exams at the end of Year 11.


Eduqas GCSE Religious Studies Route B

Key Stage 5

At Key Stage 5 we follow the OCR Religious Studies course which incorporates:

  • Philosophy of Religion
  • Religion and Ethics
  • Developments in Christian Thought

These will be externally examined in three separate exam papers taken at the end of Year 13.

Most of our A-Level teaching can be accommodated in our RE room which is located in the Sixth Form block.


OCR A-Level Religious Studies

Core RE

Those who do not follow the A-Level course in Year 12, follow a Core RE course which has been developed by the school and meets the requirements for the teaching of RE in a Catholic school.


The department is based on the Lower School site (Beechdale Road) with a suite of five specialist rooms located next to a small chapel.  Each room is resourced with a digital projector and there is a bank of tablets available to the department.  Bibles, textbooks and vibrant displays can be found in each room.  Every teacher in the department is a Religious Education specialist.


As a department we enjoy a high level of engagement and interest from the students. We work closely with the chaplains to ensure that the Religious Education and the faith life of the school work in tandem and complement each other. We take residential trips to the Briars Residential Centre in Crich in Years 9, 11 and 12 and for the last three years have had significant numbers travel to Lourdes, France where they have assisted the sick and elderly in attending pilgrimage. The RE department supports the liturgical life of the school and the retreat days offered to Years 7, 8 and 10. Our commitment to the work of CAFOD in raising awareness and funds has been longstanding and we have good connections with the charity. At our last Diocesan Canonical Inspection (2014) we achieved the grade ‘Outstanding’ for Religious Education.
